It's not what it seems!

This isn't actually a roller derby blog - it's just a coincidence that 100% of the posts so far, including this one, have the same topic.

This Saturday there was a men's bout, which was an interesting change. The Inhuman League from Sheffield versus local boys the Jakey Bites. Certainly faster and more aggressive than the women's bouts I've seen.

Played, perhaps, with somewhat less strategy. Not better or worse, just different. Different is good...roller derby wins from having the variety.

It was pretty one-sided, mind. From the first jam, there was little doubt over who would win and the Yorkshire lads let very few points slip.

It's funny though - knowing the outcome didn't take away from the enjoyment. It's still a lot of fun to cheer the underdogs and appreciate the skill of the winners. And especially, after watching the Euro2012 football final at the weekend, it's great to not see people just falling over in the hopes of cheatingly claiming a foul.

The second bout was a great home teams match between Death Stars and Bad Omens. Slightly confusing for me, since I have a small brain, as I've only seen Glasgow versus The World bouts until now; with two home teams I'm starting to recognise the skaters' faces but I'm seeing people on different teams whom I expect to be on the same team. It's not hard - I'm sure I'll cope.

I'm happy to say I now have a pretty good idea of what's going on. Except the penalties. Most of the time I don't have the first idea why people are being sent to the sin-bin. Next time I must find one of the folk with "Please ask me about roller derby" pinned to their back and get an education.
Far too happy for the Sin Bin

And the Death Stars had an escort...

My work photography is more landscape-oriented. I don't shoot people much at all. As well as enjoying the game, I'm having a great time doing photography that's a little out of my comfort zone. Fun all around!

  1. Here's another sport I'd quite like to see in the flesh - it looks, like I'm told lacrosse is, fabulously violent and yet good natured.
    Great pictures, too.
